The Sufficiency of Christ’s Work

The sufficiency of Christ’s work is a cornerstone of the doctrine of Christ Alone. Hebrews 10:14 declares, “For by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” This means that Christ’s death on the cross is entirely sufficient to save us. Nothing needs to be added to it—no rituals, no good works, no religious practices.

The sufficiency of Christ’s work also means that we can rest in His finished work. Jesus’ final words on the cross, “It is finished” (John 19:30), signify that He has accomplished everything necessary for our salvation. We don’t have to strive to earn God’s favor because Christ has already done it all.

Practical Implications:

  • Freedom from Legalism: We are freed from the burden of trying to earn salvation through works. Our standing before God is secure because of Christ’s work, not our own.
  • Assurance: We can have confidence in our salvation because it rests entirely on Christ’s perfect work, not our imperfect efforts.
  • Joy: Knowing that Christ has accomplished everything for us fills us with joy and peace, freeing us to live in gratitude and love.
